Fourth Estate Elementary School–Marcelo Green (FEES-MG) carried on with the reading programs amid distance learning with the help of teachers and parents as co-facilitators for the school year 2020-2021.
Reading is the key to become better in communication and to inflate knowledge as well as rhetorical skills, thus, reading must continue even in distance learning. Teachers need to conduct reading remediation to non-readers, struggling readers and monitor the reading level of other learners to ensure that no one will be left behind.
Distance learning is a big challenge to teachers especially in monitoring the reading skills of the learners. But the situation also gave teachers the opportunity to think ways and design interventions to improve the reading skills of their learners.
As a major platform, teachers conducted remediation to struggling readers and non-readers virtually through Gmeet and via Messenger call.
Though not all learners have the capacity to join virtual remedial sessions, they were however remediated by the Learning Support Aides (LSAs). The support of LSAs have greatly assisted and contributed to the success of the reading program of the school in the new normal.
Parents also showed their support to the reading program of the school by helping and assisting the teachers to do reading remediation at home. Some parents take videos while their child is reading a book so that teachers can assess the progress and reading level of the learners.
Hand in hand collaboration of teachers and parents in helping the learners to improve their reading skills has led the reading program of the school to fruition.
